Biking Greater Denver's Sand Creek and Creekside Trails

The 14 mile Sand Creek Regional Greenway Trail traverses Commerce City, Denver, and Aurora, Colorado. I biked the section through Denver and Aurora which is unpaved but my mountain bike had no problem. Others on the trail all had hybrids or fat tires. The north end of the trail, in Commerce City, is paved. The Greenway ends in Aurora at Colfax Avenue, where it connects with the High Line Canal Trail. I love the "motto of the trail -- "Wilderness in the city."

Along the route I saw industrial areas...

 a few neighborhoods...

... as well as some parks and small lakes.

I also passed both Bluff Lake Nature Center and and Star K Ranch Natural Area's Morton Nature Center and some lovely heavily treed areas.

Eventually, the trail will span 28 miles and connect the South Platte Greenway to the Aurora Reservoir.

When the Greenway is completed, it will include:
  • Two parallel trails: one gravel, one paved
  • Three signature parks: one each in Aurora, Commerce City, and Denver
  • Multiple trailheads to accommodate cars, horse trailers and horses
  • Neighborhood trail links to existing and new neighborhoods in each city
  • Amenities such as restrooms, water fountains, benches, shelters and picnic tables
  • Preserved and enhanced natural areas and wildlife habitats
  • Interpretive educational signs

There is also a single track side trail for mountain bikes which parallels the main trail. Though it has some short sections with deep sand, it is a fun side trail and has several exits back to the main trail for those who wish to abort...
