Disney World's Future World at Epcot

Epcot was the acronym Walt Disney's coined for his planned Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. It comprises two sections -- Future World and the World Showcase. We'll tour the Showcase in a few days, but today we explored Future World. Spaceship Earth dominates the entrance as seen below...

Within this globe, you ride cars which travel from vignette to vignette, starting with prehistoric man to the present, summarizing major developments of man's development on this planet/spaceship we occupy. Gutenberg's invention of the printing press was one such event as seen here...

The ending was a prediction of the future. They took your photos as the ride began, and at the end, they placed your photos on a screen in your car, in a story telling of your future space travels, as seen here...

Mission: Space had us join a group led by Gary Sinese training us for a mission to land on Mars. Four people were in each capsule and were assigned roles such as commander or pilot, and we successfully traveled to and landed on Mars despite some rocky moments. Whew! (This is now one of my favorite rides.)

Test Track had an interesting waiting line which extended through a variety of car testing stations for wheels, seats, etc...

... and ultimately had us board a test car which then traveled a test track -- indoors and outdoors -- simulating bumpy roads, uphill climbs, descents, curves without and with ABS on, and high speed turns. Another very well done attraction which entertained and thrilled as it taught.

Lovely landscaping is seen everywhere, adding to the enjoyment of the park...

One of my favorite rides from when I was here 25 years ago was "Journey into Imagination with Figment." Although it's been shortened and diluted, I still enjoy the character Figment and his antics. Here he is...

Another attraction was Honey I Shrunk the Audience in which we were supposedly shrunk. This was a 3D experience and was very effectively carried out as you ducked and reached for things that seemed to be right in front of your face.

In The Land building, we saw another new favorite of mine -- Soarin' -- which simulates a hang-gliding trip over cities, forests, water, and more -- magnificent scenery is shown on the immense screen, and movement of the apparatus you are on simulates stopping, starting, banking, accelerating, etc. giving the very realistic impression of your moving over these scenes.

Living with the Land was a boat ride showing uses of land and culminating with travel through two greenhouses and a fish farm -- all real, working, producing entities -- one example of which is below with large pumpkins being grown above ground...

The Seas building offered a ride in a "clamobile" as you went underwater to find Nemo. The building is a huge aquarium, and holographic cartoons of the Nemo characters appear in the water with the fish. It was too dark for photos without flash, and the flash wiped out the holograms, but here's what the reef looked like, and you imagine Nemo in the opening...
