In Memorium: M&M

I’ve had cats all my life but M&M was the sweetest, most affectionate of them all. She was nearly 18 years old, 16 with me after I adopted her from Sav-A-Pet. Previous cats were family pets, and with my teaching job, coaching cross country, directing the school's Variety Show, working track meets and basketball games. etc., the wife and kids were around the cats far more than I was. But M&M was my retirement pet -- it was just the two of us most of the time -- so we developed a special bond.

She loved to travel in my van on trips from 20 minutes to 12 hours in length. Whenever I took her to a friend for cat-sitting while I was going on a trip, M&M would sit on the passenger seat, sometimes with paws on the window, and watch the scenery go by. After getting used to the vehicle movement and road noises, she would get on my lap as I drove (on cruise control) and fall asleep. Then a slight movement of my leg to tap the brakes and she’d take umbrage and growl a bit and go back to sleep.

Her food, water, and litter box were just behind the seat and she’d use them when needed. When I’d stop for gas or at a rest stop or restaurant, she’d climb up onto the dashboard and lean against the windshield glass, soaking in the sun. When I’d return, she always wanted to stay on the dash but I wouldn’t let her in case I had to brake suddenly.

One trip I was having breakfast in a restaurant and two young kids in the next booth exclaimed to their folks,
"Look, there’s a cat in the van window!” I laughed and told them her name was M&M, and then they laughed at her name, so I told them how she had been left at a pet shelter’s back door, in a  box with M&M candy in it. The shelter then named her M&M.

She was quite a climber and jumper in her youth. Jumping up tp the kitchen counter was simple, and then a short jump atop the refrigerator. Lots of my cats over the years had done that.

When I moved into my retirement townhouse, I immediately finished the basement into a place for large family gatherings. The ceiling was wallboard and this little girl would jump from shelf to shelf in the abutting workshop/mechanical room and also the storage area, thus gaining access to the joist channels above the ceiling.

I finally had to staple cardboard onto the joist ends to block access (as seen below) fearing she'd get caught and need rescuing. Any high place was fair game for her!

When I was painting the stairway to the finished basement, I found her at the top of my 15 foot ladder!

The Christmas tree was another of her play things. She loved Christmas and I had to leave the bottom half of the tree without ornaments to prevent her from knocking them off, and I had to place it far enough away from furniture and window sills and the half-wall to prevent her from playing with ornaments on the upper half of the tree. One night when I came home I found the tree like this -- she had obviously climbed it and it toppled. I wonder if it frightened her.

A cockatiel lived with us for a while and she was quite interested in it!

One of her cat sitters taught her to drink water from faucets, so sinks became a favorite place for her.

Warm laundry fresh from the dryer always made for a nice place to sleep.

Her favorite toys were a bunch of cloth mice filled with catnip. She still had her claws so she could catch them and hold them up with her claws. I would throw one down the stairs and she'd retrieve it and bring it back. And in the new house, the dining room had a 2 story ceiling with a  walkway above. She'd reach through the railing and I'd throw a mouse up and she'd catch it with two paws or just the claws. The problem was, I was getting all the exercise with that game -- she just sat there waiting for me to throw the next one.

Here she is relaxing on that second floor walkway with the dining room behind her down below.

Any place was great place to catch a nap...

...especially if it had a view of the birds outside...

Of course, my legs and lap are the best bed...

A special thanks to the fine ladies who have served as cat sitters over the 16 years I had M&M: Ellen T., Ellen W., Becky, Lauren, Kathy R., and the late Noeline.

Farewell, dear M&M: You will never be forgotten or replaced!

Feline Factoids

-- Whiskers are twice as thick as ordinary hairs and their roots are three times deeper.

-- Kittens in the womb grow whiskers before body hair.

-- Cat ears can rotate 180 degrees to funnel sound into ear canals.

-- They can purring during inhalation, exhalation, and vocalizing.

-- They have 5 more spinal vertebrae than humans (30 vs. 25).

-- When walking or running, they step with both left legs and then both right legs (only camels and giraffes also do this.)

-- Their foot pad skin is 70 times thicker than skin elsewhere.

-- Tabby refers to a coat pattern -- with stripes on the necks, legs, and tails and spots on the bellies -- and doesn't refer to a color.

M&M and Spinach

Should I worry about my cat turning vegetarian?

(At least she still loves little bites of pork, steak, and chicken!)

There's no place like home...

It was a marvelous 4 month trip -- in the Caribbean, in Florida, and in Arkansas -- and M&M and I are now home, though my co-pilot M&M wasn't much help help on the 700 mile drive...

We left full-green-Spring in Florida, and we left 90% green Spring in Fayetteville, Arkansas, only to find not much green here in Wauconda, Illinois yet. Which simply means, I get to enjoy my third Spring of 2009 during the next few weeks! Now on with the unpacking!

Adopt A Dog!

If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him
and never say it's not quite as good as his mother's

...

...then adopt a dog.

If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour,
for as long and wherever you want...

.

..then adopt a dog.

If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn't care about football, and can sit next to you as you watch romantic movies

..

...then adopt a dog.

If you want someone who is content to get on your bed just to
warm your feet and whom you can push off if he snores...

.
..then adopt a dog !

If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn't care if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin, young or old, who acts as if every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves you unconditionally, perpetually...

.

..then adopt a dog.

BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night, only comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence is solely to ensure his happiness...

.

..then adopt a cat!

That's what I did!

Can a cat relax...

...on a lap? You be the judge...

I've heard of a dog's life being easy, but is it easier than a cat's?

On the road again...

I gained 39 degrees in temperature and lost 12-plus inches of snow cover today (pretty good trade!), and after 11.5 hours on the road, we made it to Ellen's in Arkansas. My navigator wasn't much help during the drive...

... as she kept falling asleep on the job, but more importantly...

... M&M didn't cause any commotion, other than changing from her seat to my lap every so often (and climbing onto my lap with her claws instead of jumping!)

The drive was uneventful, other than 1) seeing a number of magnificent hawks on poles, trees, or circling above, 2) paying only $1.39/gallon in central Missouri (today's tankful was under $35 instead of last summer's $80), and 3) spotting one of the Oscar Meyer Weinermobiles on I-44. Did you know they have been around since 1936? And back in the '90s, one of our Fremd HS grads who had been in my senior class the year before, brought one to school. It was her job to drive it for a year, so she stopped at school and took a few of her favorite teachers on a tour of the inside of her "ride." (It was just a large empty space with boxes full of Oscar Meyer hot dog whistles, promotional brochures, etc. -- and yes, I got one of the whistles and still have it as a memento.)

The Birds and the Cat

Such a beautiful, docile, innocently snoozing M&M, minding her own business, never bothering anyone...

Oh, look! Mourning doves at the bird feeder with snow placidly falling around them...

... and more doves in the tree...

... and even doves on the railing and huddling together against the snow and wind on the fencing behind the railing...

... but what's that? Is that the innocent princess, no longer snoozing, but rather contemplating...

... what, I wonder?

Catnip Unnecessary...

... because M&M found this package amongst the dozens that were under the tree and claimed it as her own. In this photo...

... you see the result of a week or more of her "working" on "her" box. She has stripped off much of the wrapping paper, gotten the box open, and in the photo shows her head inside it. The box was empty, which was why we allowed her to continue to mess with it. It had been a prop I had wrapped for one of the scenes in our church Christmas production last week.

The Nocturnal Prowler Strikes...

... and the tree is toppled. Sometime during the darkness, a mysterious force attacked and triumphed over yesterday's newly erected Christmas tree.

The forensic team can't determine the culprit, but I believe all the evidence points to...

...M&M, aka "Blondie Butt" and "The Princess." Cute - yes. Loveable - without a doubt. But don't let her innocent face deceive you. Her checkered past belies any pretense at innocence, and I supply the following corroboration to this allegation.

She has been caught pilfering food from the forbidden counter...

... as well as stalking and spying on the forbidden bird...

... and climbing the forbidden ladder...

... and trespassing on the forbidden desk, even to the extent of knocking vital paperwork to the floor!

But the most damaging evidence to her protestation of innocence is her prior record of attraction to and attacks upon said Christmas tree, as seen in this evidentiary presentation from last year.

But all has been forgiven, and she promises the dastardly deed will not be repeated!

The Princess, M&M

M&M got right back into the swing of things here at home after our 3 month sojourn down south. My little princess likes to sit in the chair next to me at meal time, and after an egg breakfast, she communicated a desire to sniff at what I had eaten, so I pushed the plate over to her seat and took this picture:

Back home...

... in Wauconda after the 700+ mile drive from Fayetteville. In the 3 months I was in Florida and Arkansas, we mountain biked over 500 miles, kayaked or canoed 75 miles, hiked 100+ miles, and shoveled NO snow! M&M made the long 11 hour drive okay -- not pleased with the van's motion or the road noise, but quiet and docile, mostly in my lap where she apparently felt safest. Upon arriving home, she immediately checked out all her favorite places and toys and was obviously happy to be home again.

When it rains...

It's been raining for over 40 hours now, with sporadic thunderstorms and lightning which have had M&M scampering for safety into her "den" which she found in a bathroom cabinet. She opens the door with her claws, climbs in, and the door shuts behind her, giving her the feeling of safety, I presume. A round of thunder will sound and you'll see her hunch down and slink towards the bathroom, and seconds later you'll hear the cabinet door close behind her. Pretty cute!

Heading back North!

We drove 600+ miles today and lost nearly 40 degrees in temperature! WHY are we heading back north??? The last 4 weeks we've pedaled over 250 miles on 14 different bike trails and paddled 75 miles on 9 Florida rivers -- mostly in shorts and t-shirts. Why are we heading back north??? Anyway, tomorrow we should arrive back in Fayetteville with high hopes that warm weather will settle there for the 4 weeks before heading back to Wauconda. See y'all soon!

Addition to post: Today (Wednesday) we arrived safely back at Ellen's and we are receiving a warm welcome from M&M, whose sole human contact this last 5 weeks has been Lauren's daily visits.
