Today we biked 15 miles on the McHenry County Conservation District's Hebron Trail, which was at one time the Kenosha Division Railroad which ran from Kenosha, WI to Rockford, IL for 79 years, ending in 1939. A new extension now connects the McHenry Prairie Trail to the Hebron Trail with a scenic spur trail which loops around Genoa City (WI) as seen below.
The Hebron Trail has long segments covered by a canopy of mature trees which helped shield us from the 86 degree sun this October day, but water stops were a necessity.
Numerous open areas provide broad agricultural vistas and idyllic farm scenes...
...including frequent signs warning of tractor crossings ahead. The trail is well marked from its connection with the Prairie Trail just south of Genoa City, or from the trailhead parking lot on the west side of Genoa City on Fellows Road. The sole area where you might get lost is when you hit the first small country road and the trail is blocked off. Make a left turn onto the road, cross the railroad tracks, and the trail continues from there (there are small orange directional arrows pointing the route out.)
Our reward in Hebron was an ice cream stop at the local cafe.
