Shunga Creek Trail - Topeka

We covered 650 miles today to Topeka, and after checking in and having a Mexican dinner, we found the Shunga Creek Trail and (despite the temperature still at 91 degrees at 7:15 pm) got in 10 miles on the bikes before nightfall fell.

All the road crossings are made with underpasses as seen here as Ellen coasts down the hill. The namesake Shunga Creek is always within 15 feet or so of the trail and occasionally is within sight, as seen below. The trail follows a linear park replete with playgrounds, ballfields of every sort, Frisbee golf course, pool, BMX bike course, skatepark, picnic tables and benches everywhere, nature trails, and...

... even this old 4-6-4 locomotive which I hope is scheduled for loving renovation...

... and a demonstration vegetable garden boasting huge squash, tomatoes, and such...

... and also giving us all a bit of philosophy for our lives: "Let's compost!"

In 2008 we again rode this trail enroute to Colorado and those pictures are here.
