Guana Tolomato Matanzas Biking

The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (what a mouthful!) is located about a dozen miles north of St. Augustine on Highway A1A. It encompasses over 60,000 acres of beaches, dunes, salt marsh, freshwater marsh, hammocks, and pine flatwoods. The Guana River Peninsula has 2600 acres within this area and offers 10 miles of hiking/mountain biking trails, all of which we did today.

Pine and palmetto forest and Live Oak forest seem to predominate, and the trails have many roots but mostly hard soil single track or double track. Loose sand occurs on occasion but isn't extensive except the first section out of the trailhead parking lot. The trail sections along the Guana River are especialy scenic, and the short stretches of beach are very inviting.

We saw 5 armadillos, but only this one was brave enough to pose for a photo.
