Poem #26: The Edifice of Your Mind

Education was my vocation and building things an advocation, and they merged in this poem:

Construct your edifice of knowledge
prudently, systematically,
lovingly, diligently.
Liberally pour a concrete foundation,
teeming with vocabulary,
study skills, self-motivation, and meaning.

Erect towering walls plumb and perpendicular
with science and mathematics.
Hew the timbers of your edifice
into stalwart beams of character, values,
conviction, and exemplary habits.

Wire it with technology and upgrade regularly.
Wallpaper your mind with the finer arts
of music and dance, drama and art.
Dapple your soul lavishly with shadings of philosophy,
daub with religion,
and texture with broadly brushed history.

Capture the essence and subtlety of discourse
and harness it for appropriate employ.
Roof your edifice with compassion and empathy
so abundantly
they overflow and dribble to its footings.
Structure the abstract and concrete
so they mesh into patterns of exquisite living.

And then install crystal windows
to scrutinize the world,
and spacious, inviting doors
to warmly welcome life in,
for only then can you truly
and meaningfully
live.
