Jackson, Wyoming

We drove to Jackson, Wyoming today, and after 100 miles of monotonous sage brush scenery finally hit the pretty mountainscapes like this...

... and Ellen, who has been whining for 2 weeks about not seeing any large wildlife in Colorado, was thrilled to photograph these antelope.

Then we arrived at our motel in Jackson and were pleased to discover we had a cabin instead of simply a motel room, and that it was cleaned and ready for our arrival early at 12:30...

... so we moved in and then Ellen immediately got involved with some disreputable looking locals, who fortunately proved to only be stuffed shirts and not at all bothersome.

We walked about 4 miles around Jackson, and here is Ellen sitting at 1 of the 4 entrances to the city square, which for 47 years has been decorated with gateways made of elk antlers. Just outside Jackson is the national elk refuge which provides winter quarters for 7500 elk, and each spring the local Boy Scouts collect the discarded antlers and sell them at auction.

Below are 2 photos depicting the quaint western-themed streets of Jackson. We bought the requisite t-shirts (on sale) and also finally found a pair of paddling gloves for me to use next week on our canoe trip down Montana's Missouri River. (We'd looked in a dozen or so sport stores on this trip so far with no luck.)
