Slot canyons in the Missouri Breaks

A highlight of the trip was our 2 hours hike to and through 2 connecting slot canyons at Eagle Creek Recreation Area (river mile 55.) Many of our group had never experienced a slot canyon and were awed and excited by the experience, as the side walls seem to close in on you.

The knowledge that rushing water had created this marvel of Nature was humbling, and also a bit scary, realizing there would be no escape possible if a flash flood descended down the canyon.

After exiting the upper end of the first slot canyon, we bushwacked up to the mountain top and were rewarded with this view of the white cliffs far across the Misouri River and the 2 slot canyons just below us.

Then we bushwacked down the other side and entered the upper end of the second slot canyon, following it back to its intersection with the first slot canyon.

Twice we encountered boulder clogs which we had to climb over or climb down, enhancing the adventure for all of us.
